The Camera Adds 10 Pounds

by Maria Last on April 12, 2010

Are your perceptions weighing you down?

Are the camera filters that you process your world through sabotaging your life?

When you look down the barrel of the camera what do you honestly see?

Everyone on the planet is unique in how they process their world, how they judge their experiences and even how they choose to experience their experiences. Sometimes this uniqueness is sullied because of past experiences that haven’t been let go of or because of taking on board the perceptions and judgments others have made. This can be harmful and damaging not only to others but also to ourselves and our personal empowerment.

A woman might be over the moon because her man sent her flowers, her filters processed the action and decided that it meant that he must love her. Another woman who received flowers from her man, processed the action through her filters and decided that it was a waste of money and he couldn’t be trusted with finances.

Each of these conclusions excludes all other possibilities. Each of these conclusions were made by processing the presenting circumstances through a filter that may be distorted, dysfunctional or even borrowed from somebody else.

I had the good fortune to spend time in Paris a couple of years ago. When I was telling my friends that I was going on holiday and would be spending time in Paris I was given lots of advice, everything from the best places to visit to what to eat. I was also warned that I might not have a very good time and might not like it there because French people are rude. Wow! What a weighed down perception - that a whole nation could not be rude and what a fascinating insight about the filter that person viewed life through.

One of the filters that I used to use in my life was that if I went into a clothing store that the sales assistant would pounce on me and try to make me buy stuff, and probably things that I didn’t even like. How funny! Looking back on it, it’s more than a little embarrassing as well as utterly hilarious -

(You can just imagine me doing a commando crawl into Witchery in my camouflage gear to browse unseen, out of fear that a sales sniper would pounce on me and take me hostage to the till and forcing me to purchase a peach sequinned crop top!!)

I had taken on this filter from somebody else and through my own lack of assertion allowed it to weigh down my retail therapy experience.

We all have the personal power to assert ourselves in whatever manner is appropriate for us at any given moment. Make your own choices, assert your own conclusions and trust yourself in knowing what resonates with you.

There is no substitute for an open mind and an open heart and the best thing about being in this state of openness is that filters are completely unnecessary.

There’s a reason they say  “Lights, Camera, Action”

  • turn on the lights
  • look through a clear camera and
  • take appropriate action
