“If you obey all the rules, you miss all the fun” – Katharine Hepburn
Katharine’s height, physique and bone structure made her a highly compelling screen presence but off screen she refused to conform in any way with the prevailing image of the Hollywood starlet, so despite being a complete professional, letter perfect in her lines and totally researched in her roles RKO found her difficult to deal with because of this. Style was regarded as more important than substance but Katharine refused to be limited by the weight of others perceptions.
What did she do?
She bought the rights to the Broadway play ‘The Philadelphia Story’ and turned it into a hit movie in 1940, starring alongside Cary Grant and James Steward. The Philadelphia Story resurrected her film career and has been voted one of the top 100 American films of all time.
